Bigfoot is one of the oldest legends in North American history, a dark, hairy creature that roams the forests undetected. The monster is not new – it has left huge footprints across the country’s culture for centuries.
Along the way, Bigfoot’s acquired numerous names, including Sasquatch, Stone Giant, Bushman, Tree Man, and many others, often based on words of Native American origin. While there may be some slight variation in the folklore behind these names, they are essentially Bigfoot.
The Salish Indians of the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver Island were the first to use the name “Sasquatch”, which is derived from the Salish word “se’sxac”, meaning “wild people”, according to Encylopaedia Brittanica. The Sasquatch is often described as an ape-like creature, walking upright, covered with long, dark brown, black or reddish hair, and 6 to 15 feet (2 to 4.5 meters) tall. It is said to move silently or make a high-pitched squeak.
“Bigfoot,” a nickname for Sasquatch, was first coined in 1958 by a Humboldt County, California columnist named Andrew Genzoli, who recounted a letter from a newspaper reader claiming discovered giant footprints of unknown origin. In his reply, an amused Genzoli wrote, “Perhaps we have a relative of our lovely Himalayan Snowman, our own wandering Willie in Weitchpec.”
Those words struck a chord with readers wanting to know more and helped lay the groundwork for Bigfoot and its worldwide popularity. Genzoli sent a reporter named Betty Allen to the Bluff Creek site where Bigfoot is said to have discovered to see the tracks it had made and talk to the workers. Originally, Genzoli called the creature “Big Foot” but later renamed it “Bigfoot” because he thought it looked better in print. Other articles by the pair, along with photos of the race tracks, attracted press attention across the United States.
So, is Bigfoot real?
Ancient Native Americans created the now-famous “Haired Man” figurines in Central California in honor of a gigantic, unnamed creature. The photos appear to depict a monster nearly 9 feet (2.6 meters) tall, with an entire family by its side. This bit of visual history could be thousands of years old, proof that this legend has an incredibly long history.
There are also stories of Bigfoot-like creatures in other cultures. The Yeti, is a large bear of the Himalayas. With roots in pre-Buddhist history, the Yeti appeared only in cold, snowy climates and often at high altitudes.
Then there was the Lovely Snowman, named in 1921 by Henry Newman, a writer recounting the adventures of British mountaineers who had just returned from Mount Everest. They told of giant footprints in the snow that their local guide said were caused by “metoh-kangmi”, which basically means “bear-man snowman”. Newman used a bit of creative licensing and decided that “Abominable Snowman” sounded better. Some experts suggest that the Yeti and the Adorable Snowman are the same thing (but not the same as Sasquatch).
Proof of Bigfoot
No one had ever caught Bigfoot, but they did find the footprints it left behind. Some are nearly 2 feet (60 cm) long and 8 inches (20 cm) wide, the tag of a large creature that experts say distinguishes between docile and hostile, depending on the situation and their personalities.
The most famous proof to date of Bigfoot’s existence is the 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film. Just a minute long, the sensational footage was created by Bob Gimlin and Roger Patterson, who near Bluff Creek, California were playing with a rented video camera when they spotted a mysterious creature.
They captured a few moments of an alleged Bigfoot as it was walking. In one iconic frame, the creature turns back to look at the camera – a bit of the incredible image that made the two men’s names.
With so many sightings and so many eyewitnesses over the decades and centuries, skeptics point out that we still have no concrete proof that Bigfoot exists. And that is strange.
After all, says David Bakara, human bones are everywhere. Why haven’t we found Bigfoot’s remains yet? As the owner of Expedition: Bigfoot! The Sasquatch Museum, located in Cherry Log, Georgia, Bakara has spent about 40 years of his life trying to come up with real evidence of Bigfoot. (He confirms that Bigfoot and Sasquatch are one and the same.)
“We should have some physical evidence of the millions of people who lived and died 200 million years ago until now,” he said.
That lack of hard evidence doesn’t sit well with the hundreds of witnesses who have claimed to have seen Bigfoot with their own eyes, he said. He and his wife, Malinda, are among them.
He recalls a 2010 investigation when they observed two Bigfoot at night with a thermal camera. For about 10 minutes, they observed these creatures, which eventually returned to the Florida marshes. Sadly, his expensive camera was not capable of recording.
Bakara is a longtime member of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Foundation, and he’s heard every possible explanation for the creature’s existence…as well as the lack of evidence.
Some of his groups suggested that Bigfoot was extraterrestrial. Perhaps they have a hidden ability or some kind of trait that makes them unstoppable, dead or alive.
He says others believe Bigfoot has paranormal origins, and that, “these are some kind of spirit that can come and go. A lot of very good eyewitnesses have seen these things disappear instantly. in front of them.” Perhaps, he speculated, they had access to special portals that could knock them out once discovered.
His?
“In my opinion, they are not a natural animal to this world. “It’s an animal that didn’t come to Earth through normal, natural processes. That’s the best I can tell you.”
Meet Bigfoot
If you happen to come across Bigfoot while in the woods, Bakara says be careful. “It’s not like encountering a predictable large mammal,” like a deer or an elk. “Go. Leave them alone.”
He says many people believe they’ll come back to take photos or videos for proof of the encounter, but the reality is you’ll most likely be too panicked to care.
If you spot a Bigfoot, “you’ve seen something that shouldn’t exist,” he says. “It’s like facing a male elephant. And then all the bravery you thought you had in the blink of an eye is gone because you realize you’re facing a super predator.”
His advice? Let Bigfoot be. Because whether you call it Sasquatch or anything else, it’s not the kind of creature you want to face alone in the wild.
NOW THAT IS CARE OF US
Since 1976, the FBI has had a Bigfoot file, a database of many stories and eyewitnesses that confirmed the creature’s existence. They even analyzed the creature’s supposed hair. Their conclusion? It’s deer hair.
